In the heart of Kampala, Uganda, Albert Ssempeke’s home holds a priceless archive of Buganda Kingdom’s royal court music. In 2015, the Global Sound Movement (GSM) set out to capture these sounds, preserving a heritage rooted in centuries of tradition.

A House Full of Instruments Stepping into Ssempeke’s home was like entering a musical time capsule. Endongo lyres, amadinda xylophones, engalabi drums—each instrument told a story. The GSM team meticulously recorded these sounds, documenting the tonal warmth of the amadinda, the rhythmic depth of the engalabi, and the soulful resonance of the endongo.

The Akadinda Experience One unforgettable moment was recording the akadinda, a massive xylophone played by multiple musicians. The interwoven rhythms were hypnotic, showcasing Buganda’s rich tradition of musical collaboration. Every strike of the mallet was a piece of living history, now preserved for generations to come.
