At Global Sound Movement (GSM), we believe music is more than sound; it’s a living, breathing testament to culture, identity, and connection. Recording traditional instruments in Uganda exemplifies this philosophy, turning every session into a profound exploration of heritage and creativity.

We stood under the Ugandan sun, surrounded by lush landscapes, as local artisans shared their instruments and the stories behind them. Each drumbeat, string pluck, or melodic whistle carries centuries of tradition, often rooted in community celebrations, spiritual rituals, or storytelling. The diversity of these instruments is astonishing—from the deep resonance of the Endongo (a traditional stringed lyre) to the rhythmic pulse of the Engoma (drums) and the hypnotic hum of the Adungu (a nine-string arched harp).

Our recording process is not just about capturing pristine audio. It’s a collaborative journey. Working with local musicians ensures the authenticity of each sound while fostering cross-cultural learning. Depending on where the instrument is best heard, the process often involves setting up makeshift studios in schools, community centres, or even outdoors. Natural acoustics play a big role—an open field might bring out the warm, earthy tones of a drum, while the interior of a hut enhances the harp's resonant charm.

These recordings, once digitised, become more than audio files. They become a resource for composers, producers, and sound designers worldwide, allowing them to incorporate authentic Ugandan sounds into their work while promoting global awareness of the country’s rich musical heritage.

Every note recorded is a step toward preserving these extraordinary traditions for future generations, ensuring the spirit of Uganda’s music resonates far beyond its borders.
